Dr Anna Nowak
Dr Anna Nowak attended 2008 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego in April 2008 to present the abstract entitled Cisplatin and pemetrexed synergises with immunotherapy to result in cures in established murine malignant mesothelioma.
"I was delighted to receive the 2008 MOGA/Roche travel grant, which enabled me to attend the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego in May this year. Despite doing a PhD in tumour immunology, international conferences with a clinical component, such as ASCO, have always been higher on my agenda than basic research conferences. At ASCO, whilst I try to attend as many translational science sessions as possible, there is always the ‘pull’ of the clinical sessions which promise changes to patient management tomorrow or next year rather than in 10 years time. So it was wonderful to attend my first basic research international meeting and to be able to immerse myself in science for a week. I was able to go to not only the tumour immunology sessions, but also to spend time learning about other fields I am less familiar with. Even the trade display held new information – I am now looking at animal management and laboratory software that I didn’t know existed. I also participated in networking sessions for junior faculty, making useful international contacts. My poster presentation “Cisplatin and pemetrexed synergises with immunotherapy to result in cures in established murine malignant mesothelioma” generated plenty of interest, and I have come back with new ideas. I would highly recommend AACR to any oncologists doing laboratory research, and my thanks go to MOGA and Roche for supporting me to attend this meeting." Dr Anna Nowak.
