ONCOLOGY SPECIFIC MAINTENANCE OF PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS PROGRAMME (OSMOPS)
The Oncology Specific Maintenance of Professional Standards Programme (OSMOPS) is a voluntary programme introduced in 1998 with the aim of encouraging medical oncologists to undertake continuing educational activities so that the highest standards of clinical practice and patient care will continue to be provided.
OSMOPS also provides a formalised procedure to demonstrate participation in the quality improvement model of continuing medical education and quality assurance for such purposes as employment and medical defence.
The OSMOPS program is structured around a five year rolling cycle in which participants annually self report their involvement in continuing education activities with the goal of achieving a minimum number of points over a five year period. Points can be accumulated in three main categories: continuing education; teaching & research and quality assurance.
Only medical oncologists who are members of both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia (MOGA) are able to participate in the OSMOPS programme. While the programme is voluntary all members of MOGA are actively encouraged to participate.
