Background
Medicines Australia leads the research-based pharmaceutical industry of Australia. Its members develop and manufacture medicines and vaccines, invest in Australian research, and help bring local innovations to the global stage. More information can be accessed via Medicines Australia website.
Medicines Australia’s Code of Conduct sets the standards for the ethical marketing and promotion of prescription pharmaceutical products in Australia and provides a principles-based framework for appropriate and ethical decision making. It complements the legislation requirements of the Therapeutic Goods Regulations and the Therapeutic Goods Act. The Code of Conduct, which was established in 1960, has been revised on a regular basis, with the current Edition 20 being available on Medicines Australia website.
Adherence to the Code of Conduct is a requirement of membership of Medicines Australia, and non-member companies are also required to comply through a condition of marketing approval of their prescription medicine products. The College has contributed to this work over a number of years through the nomination of members to the Committee and currently has three (3) nominees serving terms from 2025-2027.
Term and commitment
Appointment to the Committee is for a three (3) years term
The Committee convenes via online meetings only when complaints are received, typically on the third Monday of the month between 9:30-12:30pm.
Given the above point, not all scheduled meetings will proceed if there are no complaints to consider. Members are provided confirmation about five weeks in advance of scheduled meetings.
Meetings are rostered to ensure an even distribution of responsibilities among members.
If a matter is appealed, the Appeals Committee meets in person. In-person meetings are usually held in Sydney and occasionally in Melbourne.
Members may be eligible for remuneration as outlined in the position description for Committee members.
New nominees may be invited to participate in meetings if a rostered member is unavailable.
