COMMUNICATION SKILLS TRAINING WORKSHOP

This workshop provides tools and language to build trusting relationships for better patient experience and health outcomes. Approved by the RACP and using real-life situations participants delve into the complexities of assessing patients' cancer journeys, from cancer severity to survival chances and other critical factors.

National Oncology Mentorship Program (NOMP)

Endorsed and supported by MOGA, 2023 saw the launch of the inaugural National Oncology Mentorship Program (NOMP).
The aims of this program are to allow:
A confidential and safe forum for oncology trainees and young oncologists to debrief with a more senior colleague on the challenges of oncology training/career navigation and to address uncertainty/stress/burnout during these challenging times
An avenue to support career and personal development and provide independent feedback
Provide trainees with opportunities to discuss career goals with like-minded consultants that could provide research or clinical networking opportunities

Medical oncology trainees/young oncologists who join the program will be matched with volunteer consultant mentors within their state, but outside their hospital network. Following a virtual orientation session, mentees and mentors will meet a minimum of four times in the year.

The 6-day program is a mix of academic and practical sessions covering clinical trial design, methodology, and implementation including:
• Protocol Development Group Sessions with designated faculty members leading a group of 8 participants in receiving daily assistance with their evolving trial concepts while applying the knowledge acquired during the workshop.
• One-to-one Faculty Sessions providing participants with individual counselling on protocol related issues and career development.
• Small Group Discussion Sessions led by key faculty experts on key topics essential to the development of clinical trials and facilitating discussion on the difficulties and challenges of a particular type of trial.
• Plenary Lectures and Panel Discussions by faculty and invited experts on specific core topics in the design and implementation of high-quality clinical trials.
• Session breaks, communal meals, a team building exercise and social activities provide additional opportunities for networking among participants and faculty.
• Pre and post access to workshop online lecture library and resources developed by the ACORD initiative faculty and invited experts since program establishment are available to faculty and participants covering the full spectrum of topics covered by the Workshop.

Up to 65 participants will be selected by a competitive application process based on the quality and potential of their proposed research project, and referee support from their supervisor, department head, trials centre lead or senior co-investigators.
Applicants from all oncology disciplines are welcome, including medical, surgical, radiation and psycho-oncology, haematology, palliative care, pathology, nursing and allied health.
Participants will work with their peers and receive individual guidance from the faculty to develop their concept for a clinical research study into a study protocol suitable for submission to a Human Research Ethics Review Committee or funding body.

The 2025 MOGA Annual Scientific Meeting, held 12–14 August in Melbourne, brought Australian oncologists together to explore the rapidly evolving field of cancer immunotherapy. Under the theme Beyond the Checkpoints – Navigating the Immunotherapy Revolution, the meeting highlighted how immunotherapy complements established cancer treatments, addressing both therapeutic advances and the management of immune-related adverse events.

Prof Wendy Lipworth and Dr Lisa Parker will share their expertise on the definition and clinical implications of COIs, and how medical oncologists can identify and manage our COIs. Our panel, also including Prof John Zalcberg AO and Cancer Voices consumer representative Ms Karen van Gorp, will invite a lively Q&A to cap off the hour. Australia & Asia Pacific Clinical Oncology Research Development (ACORD) Workshop
ACORD brings participants with new Research ideas together with local and international experts who provide the knowledge, skills, experience and global perspectives needed to develop high quality clinical cancer research. The Workshop uses problem-based, participant-centred, adult-learning principles including short, interactive lectures combined with small group, problem-oriented, protocol development sessions focusing on both clinical research methods, and on oncology sub-specialties. Participants also benefit from individual feedback from multiple experts as they develop their research protocols, and from the opportunity to establish ongoing, long term, research collaborations.
