Responding to Emotions in Cancer

Presented by Cancer Council Victoria, the Effective Cancer Communication (ECC) Program delivers best practice communication skills education to health professionals, non-clinical staff and volunteers. Effective communication fosters patient autonomy within health services and enables supportive relationships with cancer patients and their families.

Responding to Emotions in Cancer: This course has been developed for clinical staff and provides tools and language to build trusting relationships for better patient experience and health outcomes. The course provides the opportunity to:

  • Explore emotional reactions to cancer through experiential learning with simulated patients.

  • Recognise emotions and apply frameworks to respond effectively.

  • Receive feedback on personal communication challenges in a safe environment.

Each workshop will include:

  • Program resources

  • One professional actor (simulated patient)

  • Two ECC facilitators provided by Cancer Council Victoria

  • Online delivery via Microsoft Teams

  • Certificate provided for each participant upon course completion

Participants will be required to choose one of the following options:

Workshop 1: Thursday 19 March 2026 | 1:00pm - 5:00pm (AEDT)

Workshop 2: Thursday 13 August 2026 | 1:00pm - 5:00pm (AEST)

Workshop 3: Tuesday 13 October 2026 | 1:00pm - 5:00pm (AEDT)

Registration

Priority will be given to third-year trainees undertaking this training in 2026 to support completion of their training requirements and progression to Fellowship. Registration is exclusive to MOGA Trainee members.

This training session is accredited by the Advanced Training Committee – Medical Oncology of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). All trainees who complete the session will receive a Certificate of Completion. Completion of this program fulfils the mandatory RACP training requirement for Australian medical oncology trainees and contributes to improved patient care and outcomes.

Booking fee

Participants will be required to pay a non-refundable booking fee of AUD$150.00 + GST to secure their place at the workshop.

Cancellations

Participants are required to provide at least 72 hours’ notice to enable the MOGA Secretariat to reallocate the registration to another trainee.

No-show and late cancellations 

MOGA reserves the right to retain the booking fee for late cancellations or no-shows, to cover administrative costs.
