GUIDELINES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THEMANAGEMENT OF PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA IN AUSTRALIA
In 2013, the Asbestos and Dust Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI) developed Australia’s first clinical guidelines for the
diagnosis and management of pleural mesothelioma. Since this time, there have been significant changes in standards of
care, including the World Health Organization pathologic classification, the evolving role of surgical intervention and
radiotherapy, and the advent of immunotherapy.
As a result, a group of Australian experts was convened in early 2024 to develop up-to-date clinical guidelines for the
diagnosis and treatment of pleural mesothelioma patients. The membership of the committee covers general practice,
pathology, surgery, radiology, respiratory medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, genetics, epidemiology, nursing,
survivorship, supportive and palliative care, with additional consumer and legal representation. The authors have developed
consensus-based recommendations based on the latest international guidelines, systematic reviews and academic literature,
and the specific Australian regulatory and logistic requirements.
This a national effort governed by ADDRI, with funding support from iCare and the Federal Government’s Asbestos and
Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA). Further information on the project, including the committee membership, may
be accessed here: https://addri.org.au/educate/health-professionals/coming-early-2026-guidelines-and-recommendationsfor-

Following consultation, the committee may seek formal endorsement of the guidelines.
If you could email comments to guidelines@addri.org.au that would be appreciated.
We anticipate the new guidelines will be published online in early 2026.
