Enhancing Multidisciplinary Complex Cancer Care: The Precision Care Initiative at Prince of Wales Hospital

The UNSW Precision Care Initiative is a clinical and health services research initiative, exploring optimal implementation of precision medicine in oncology. It provides clinicians in the Australian public healthcare system with access to a specialist molecular oncology team, supporting the integration of genomics-informed treatment and prevention strategies into routine care. Based at Prince of Wales Hospital and funded through the MRFF (RARUR000125), the initiative addresses a critical gap in public cancer care: mainstreaming structured peer-to-peer support for multidisciplinary decision-making in precision oncology.

The service offers fortnightly virtual MDTs for complex or ‘evidence grey’ cases, synthesising current literature and integrating somatic and germline findings to support tailored, evidence-based care. A single patient-facing consultation (via telehealth or in-person) is also available to assist patients with interpretation of molecular results, without disrupting existing care relationships. Additionally, genetics consultations are being provided for potentially germline variants identified in highly actionable somatic genes through CaSP molecular profiling

Clinicians are encouraged to refer patients with complex molecular profiles, rare cancers, or those who may benefit from review of optimal targeted therapies or availability of relevant clinical trials. or compassionate access programs Trainees are welcome to participate in MDTs for collaborative learning alongside oncology, pathology, and genomics experts. The service is currently available at no cost to clinicians or patients. To date, the Precision Care Initiative has received over 130 referrals to support clinicians and their patients Australia-wide.
