Applications from suitably qualified candidates are invited for a Medical Oncology Fellow position at the Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre, Grampians Health. This twelve-month position, commencing in February 2026, provides comprehensive clinical and research training under the supportive supervision of a collegial and highly experienced consultant team of five full-time and five visiting medical oncologists.
Requirements
Candidates should possess appropriate qualifications and postgraduate experience in oncology, along with a demonstrated commitment to oncology patient care and research activities. The position will ideally suit candidates who have either fully or partly completed advanced training in medical oncology and hold or will be eligible for specialist registration. Candidates should also possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Duties and Opportunities
This is a clinical and research-based role. The Fellow will be actively involved in clinical trials, participate in all relevant clinical trial unit meetings and activities, and undertake independent research under the supervision of an experienced mentor. The Oncology unit has a well-established, busy, and dynamic clinical trials unit involved in multiple clinical trials, including early-phase studies. The department also maintains collaborative research relationships with metropolitan hospitals, including the Austin Hospital and other regional institutions.
Clinical responsibilities include participation in oncology clinics four days per week, including fortnightly outreach clinics to Horsham or Stawell. The Fellow will participate in breast, upper gastrointestinal, colorectal, urological, thoracic, neuro-oncology, head and neck, gynaecological, skin cancer and inpatient multidisciplinary team meetings and is expected to attend consultant ward rounds two to three times a week. The fellow will participate in the after-hours on-call and weekend oncology ward rounds roster, an integral component of the comprehensive training experience.
Academic responsibilities include participation in regular Journal Club sessions, Mortality and Morbidity meetings, and junior doctor teaching programmes. The Fellow will have protected time to attend the weekly Victorian Medical Oncology Training Group education series in Melbourne. The Fellow will have the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience by being involved in undergraduate medical student teaching from the University of Melbourne and Deakin University.
This position provides opportunities for professional development through attendance at regional, national, and international oncology meetings and conferences, subject to leave approval from the Head of Medical Oncology. The role offers comprehensive clinical exposure to regional cancer care while enabling meaningful research contributions with publication potential.
About Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre (BRICC)
The Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre is a comprehensive regional cancer service housed within a purpose-built facility that opened in 2013. The centre offers a complete range of oncological services, including an outpatient chemotherapy unit, at-home cancer services, two linear accelerators for radiotherapy, a dedicated inpatient oncology unit, and an established and rapidly expanding clinical trials unit. The service benefits from comprehensive allied health support, including specialised cancer coordinators and nurses (including Breast cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer and 'all -cancer' nurses, and lung and bowel cancer coordinators ), oncology pharmacy services, physiotherapy, exercise physiotherapy, speech, dietetics, occupational therapy, and social work services. Close collaborative relationships exist with the co-located radiation oncology service and the nearby Gandarra Palliative Care Facility. The radiotherapy services are provided locally, in the BRICC building, by Ballarat-Austin Radiation Oncology Centre ( BAROC ) through a collaborative partnership between Austin Health and Grampians Health Ballarat.
The medical oncology service operates within a structured multidisciplinary framework, serving a catchment population exceeding 350,000 patients across the broader Grampians Health network. The department maintains close working relationships with all clinical departments within Ballarat Base Hospital and provides oncological expertise throughout the region. The Grampians Health Oncology Unit provides outreach clinics and treatment services at Grampians Health Wimmera, Grampians Health Stawell Hospital, and Maryborough District Health Service.
Grampians Health operates as an integrated health service delivering comprehensive healthcare across western Victoria, with Ballarat Base Hospital serving as the major referral centre for the region.
Ballarat Base Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment project, which will deliver a new hospital tower featuring an expanded emergency department, 100 additional beds, a state-of-the-art theatre suite, and new critical care facilities.
