RACP Curriculum Update for 2027
MESSAGE FROM THE MOGA EXECUTIVE
As everyone is aware, the RACP will be implementing the new Medical Oncology Curriculum in 2027.
Medical Oncology is the last RACP Speciality group to be implemented. The delay reflected the ongoing advocacy by MOGA, the Medical Oncology Curriculum Review Group and the Training Programs Committee - Medical Oncology to move training to 3 years core training to reflect the breadth of foundational knowledge required in our ever-expanding speciality. The new Curriculum will thus have some workforce implications and would encourage Supervisors to read through the various facets of the new Curriculum here - Advanced Training Curricula: Purpose of Advanced Training | RACP Online Learning.
Specific considerations for sites will include:
The increased Supervisory requirements with the expansion of workplace-based assessments
Whether “Fellow” positions will be suitable for Advanced Trainees or not
With regards to the Curriculum itself, it is not as proscriptive as the last iteration. Training sites may consider complementing the RACP
Curriculum with the MOGA endorsed ESMO/ASCO Recommendations for a Global Curriculum in Medical Oncology – Edition 2023, if Trainees feel they would benefit from a more proscriptive format.

We are delighted to confirm that the RACP College Education Committee (CEC) has approved new curricula for both Medical Oncology (Adult Medicine) and Medical Oncology (Paediatrics & Child Health) Advanced Training programs, which will be implemented with incoming first-year trainees in 2027.
What is changing?
From 2027, first year Advanced Trainees in Medical Oncology will start learning under the new curriculum. The new curriculum standards and Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (LTA) requirements can be viewed via RACP Online Learning (Adult Medicine) and RACP Online Learning (Paediatrics & Child Health).
Trainees, supervisors and relevant assessors will use new work-based assessments which have replaced the existing PREP (Physician Readiness for Expert Practice) tools, supported by a new technology system, the Training Management Platform (TMP). This will change how trainees and educators plan learning, record feedback, and assess performance against the standards to determine how trainees progress through training.
Key changes from the existing PREP program to the new curriculum include:
Adult Medicine
the required core training time has increased from 24 to 36 months
the non-core training time has been removed (there is no change to the overall duration of training – 36 months remains the requirement). Please refer to the LTA programs for further information, including a caveat for core training
new work-based learning and assessment tools will replace the former PREP assessments
the adoption of new RACP learning courses that will be common across all Advanced Training programs
all core training rotations require at least two supervisors, one of which must be FRACP in Medical Oncology
supervisor reports and trainee reports have been replaced with progress reports with four required per training phase.
Paediatrics & Child Health
the list of suitable non-core training types has been updated and expanded
new work-based learning and assessment tools have replaced the former PREP assessments
the adoption of new RACP learning courses that will be common across all Advanced Training programs
all training rotations require at least two supervisors, one of whom must be FRACP in Medical Oncology (Paediatric & Child Health)
supervisor reports and trainee reports have been replaced with progress reports, with four required per training phase
recommended attendance at a nationally or internationally recognised training course or conference in Medical Oncology (Paediatrics & Child Health) by the end of training, with a suggested list of suggested conferences supplied.
Existing trainees who started training in 2026 or earlier
There is no change in requirements for current and continuing Advanced Trainees enrolled in the current PREP Medical Oncology (Adult Medicine) and PREP Medical Oncology (Paediatrics & Child Health) Advanced Training programs. Trainees who started Medical Oncology (Adult Medicine) training in 2026 or earlier will continue to follow the PREP program.
